WitW - Session 40

In the middle of the night, after Almyre and Ty solved the puzzle of the dwarven door, Kerchek awoke with a start at the sound. Rather than reacting with hostility, he expressed immediate interest in uncovering his forefather's secrets. The party decided to forgo finishing their long rest, choosing instead to explore the newly revealed path.

They climbed the stairs, which led them into a large cavern that spiraled ever upward. Along the way, they debated returning to the inn to rest properly. Ty, however, had a sinking feeling that the undead haunted this place. Kerchek chimed in, recounting a ghost story his father once told him about a spirit protecting the spring. The atmosphere grew tense as the group realized this place was far from safe. The mood shifted further when Ty accidentally revealed they were capable of magic—a grave crime in the empire.

Kerchek attempted to scam the party out of 300 gold, but they quickly subdued him, knocking him unconscious. Unfortunately, this act awakened the spirit of the spring, who accused the party of defiling its sanctity. The ghost lashed out, slowing Almyre and Horace with its magic. Despite the hindered movement, the party leapt into action, though they quickly discovered the ghost was resistant to magical damage.

Horace pursued the ghost relentlessly, attempting to force it to drop the slow spell, while the ghost retaliated with a devastating attack and summoned a small army of skeletons. Even so, the party persevered. As a last resort, the ghost possessed the incapacitated Kerchek, trying to strike a deal through him.

Almyre cast Arms of Hadar, killing Kerchek and simultaneously forcing the ghost out of his body. This left the spirit vulnerable, allowing Horace to deliver the final blow.

Ty immediately cast Revivify on Kerchek, bringing him back to life. The party convinced him that they had saved him from the ghost and managed to restore their tenuous relationship. Grateful and now sympathetic to their plight, Kerchek admitted that not all magic might be evil and promised not to expose them to the Solarian.

The group explored the rest of the cavern, discovering 300 gold, a +2 longbow, and a medallion in the fountain spring. The spring's magical properties healed the party, though removing the medallion diminished some of its energy. Later, Kerchek used the medallion to open the sealed door, allowing him to return home safely.

That night, Ty spoke with Pascal, who revealed he hadn’t felt his connection to Jeatz for three days. Unfortunately, Pascal couldn’t pinpoint the locations of anti-magic fields, but he promised to alert Ty if he sensed Jeatz again. The party finally rested in their magical tent, preparing to explore the massive support tower of Lightwatch the next day.

We cut to Jeatz, trapped in his anti-magic cell. Clerics arrived to interrogate him, and he reluctantly divulged everything he knew about the Wild—except for information about his friends. The next day, the clerics returned and escorted him upstairs to face High Priest Odegaard.
