WitW - Session 38

The party slept well after killing Gravernux the day before. Horace took a few dragon fingers as trophies, hanging them from his neck. Ty flew into the sky, having wild-shaped into a bird, and saw thick underbrush covering the area around them—clearly indicating a green dragon’s lair nearby. With Pascal's help, Almyre was able to track down the entrance to the lair. Horace led the way, cutting through the thick, thorny underbrush.

They entered the lair, which was pitch black. Horace strapped a torch to his halberd, Ty carried a hand-held torch, and Almyre had no issues, given her darkvision. The lair’s first challenge was a seemingly innocuous statue that burst to life. They discovered that the cave itself was also fighting against them, imbued with the residual magic of Gravernux, the dragon. The statue posed little challenge to the group, but they found it hiding a strange staff within its stone body. Almyre revealed it to be a Staff of Sheep Resurrection. At that moment, they also heard what sounded like crying echoing through the cave.

Ty took her own path, climbing a steep rock face and nearly being crushed by enchanted boulders. She then turned into a spider to climb along the ceiling, doing reconnaissance. Meanwhile, Almyre and Horace continued deeper into the cave. Almyre found a sheep and used the staff to resurrect it as a walking sheep skeleton. Moving on, they noticed disturbances in a pond ahead—a foreshadowing of a later challenge. They continued onward to find Glitter, discovering a "pixie" circle that blessed Horace and Almyre.

In a larger chamber, the party was ambushed by two water elementals. The lair itself came alive once again, assailing them with vines, thorny walls, and enchantments meant to charm them. None of these proved to be significant obstacles. Horace opened the fight with a critical hit, allowing the party to focus on the second elemental, which was attempting to drown Almyre. Almyre managed to finish off the watery creature with a firebolt. While deliberating on their next move, Ty formed a mental blood link with Almyre.

The group came across a pit of bones. Believing there were sheep bones within, they were instead ambushed by vine-controlled skeletons. However, the skeletons were quickly obliterated by the trio before they could mount a serious threat.

Afterward, the party took a short rest and discovered several mushrooms equivalent to potions of healing. Ty cooked some to regain health. Altogether, they found five skeletal sheep during their exploration of the cave.

Eventually, they approached the end of the tunnel, wary of the poison cloud emanating from it. There, they discovered the source of the crying—a giant troll named Hooba, who was mourning the loss of his sheep friends. He explained that "Daddy Gravernux" used to bring them back, but the dragon was gone. The party reunited Hooba with his sheep friends, and Ty's successful persuasion check convinced Hooba not to harm them.

As a reward, Hooba’s sheep retrieved treasures from the dragon’s hoard, bringing the party a collection of healing potions, a Tent of Regeneration, a Cloak of Arachnida, and 900 gold (of which Ty took none). The party rested and leveled up.

Meanwhile, Baal—the spirit residing in Horace's amulet—spoke to him, further empowering the amulet. In exchange, Horace was tasked with eventually traveling to the Nine Hells to assist in Baal's rescue, as the god was trapped by a powerful entity.

The scene then shifted to Jeatz, who had been resurrected and brought before an inquisition by the priests. He initially resisted their interrogation, even without his sword, and managed to hold out briefly. However, they broke his arm, forcing him to submit to questioning. When they asked if he could use magic, a latent wild magic surge from Pascal caused Jeatz to burst into magical darkness
