WitW - Session 35
Jeatz saw the carrion beast bounding toward the city wall in a vision, and initiative was on. He quickly intuited several things: the clerics could get them to shore in four rounds, and that Odegaard wouldn’t hesitate to obliterate Duvos if it meant destroying the carrion beast Jeatz had seen in his vision.
Jeatz immediately went to Lady Zira to warn her of the threat, and she promised to do what she could to help minimize the destruction Odegaard might unleash. Jeatz then impersonated Odegaard, ordering the ship to get underway. The party headed toward the city via a cleric-powered speedboat, while Jeatz arrived slightly sooner by using Dimension Door. However, this caused him to trigger a wild magic surge, and he suddenly gained the ability to see magic.
Luckily, Jeatz arrived early enough for most of the citizens to escape across the bridge to safety. Once the beast crashed through the city wall, the battle commenced. The Solarian and city guard rushed into action, fighting off the wild-shaped druids.
Jeatz ran to save one last citizen—an older woman—who was tragically consumed by the beast. He continued his attempts to connect with the creature but to no avail. Both he and Almyre immediately launched Fireball spells at the foes. Horace focused on fighting off the smaller blood oozes and then moved on to battle the druids, distracting them from his allies. Shockingly, Almyre succeeded on all her Constitution checks to remain a T-Rex, giving her a massive health pool.
Finally, the Royal Host's weapons came into range to fire without disadvantage and began whittling down the beast bit by bit. The guns were incredibly accurate, with only a few misses, but no major damage yet. Almyre, still polymorphed as a T-Rex, prepared to deal serious damage. The beast wasted no time pummeling T-Rex Almyre, but she served as a valuable distraction. Eventually, the beast broke her out of T-Rex form and downed her. Meanwhile, Jeatz triggered another wild magic surge, becoming large, but it didn’t help him break the grapple he was in.
The battle coalesced in the center of town. The Solarian forces held their ground, with one landing a critical hit on a Witch Bolt. Reinforcements arrived while Horace continued slashing through the druids.
In a tragic turn, Almyre was consumed by the beast, leading to her death. However, in a miraculous moment, Almyre rolled a natural 20 on a religion check. She reached out to Glacius, who immediately took control of one of the clerics, forcing them to dive into the beast and cast Revivify on Almyre, shoving her out of the creature’s body.
Jeatz attempted to don the vampiric necklace they had stolen, but after passing the saving throw, the necklace leaped from him to the ground. Another barrage from the Royal Host devastated Frederick’s Inn but also severely weakened the beast.
In a final attempt to communicate with the creature, Jeatz heard it whisper, "Remove the curse." At this, Almyre cast Remove Curse, managing to overcome a very difficult DC, and finally bested the beast. What appeared in it's place is a druid in red holding a crown of thorns.
